Adapted from wikipedia: The Orchestra was established in 1951 by law of the regional parliament, thanks to the initiative of a group of soloists from the Opera Orchestra of Palermo's Massimo Theatre, but only since 1958 has the orchestra become stable. Since the beginning of 2001, the orchestra has been based at the Politeama Theatre. In 1958, the orchestra achieved the complete recruitment of musicians after recruiting from among the best in Italy. In order to pursue their goals, the musicians themselves had the orchestra's statute amended, requiring confirmation of personnel every three years, the first in Italy with such a measure. Early conductors included Georges Sébastian and Jean Martinon. The orchestra participated in the celebrations of Puccini's centenary in Torre del Lago, and received critical and public acclaim. Octavius Ziino was appointed artistic director in 1959. Conductors 1959-1970 Sergiu Celibidache 1970- 1995 Roberto Pagano (2) 1996 Mario Messinis
