British missionary (born September 8, 1847 in Kendal, England – died October 12, 1907 in Morecambe, England) A minister in the Congregational Church, Baron worked as a missionary in Madagascar between 1872 and 1903 or later. He learned to speak Malagasy fluently and even without an accent. He wrote important commentaries on several books of the bible and a number of hymns in Malagasy. In addition, he published widely in geology and botany (many new plant species he discovered are called Baroni after him) and served as Vice President of the Académie Malgache.
