The writer Zemgaliešu Biruta (real name Konstance Augustīne Grencione) (1878–1906) is one of the most legendary Latvian women of the early 20th century. In 1905 she participated in the events of the revolution in Riga. She emigrated to France in early 1906, returned in the summer, and was arrested and interrogated in September for her involvement in the revolution. After being released from prison, she is not allowed to leave Riga. Dies of suicide by poisoning. It has been sometimes modified as “Biruta Zemgaliete” during Soviet time to fit name and surname scheme and is used as a ANV. In no way it is correct to use “Biruta Zemgaliešu”, as it is nonsence in Latvian language.
