Widely considered the first person to receive a Broadway credit as sound designer. Born c.1924 Michigan Died January 28, 2013 New Jersey (89). Theatrical sound pioneer who received the USITT Distinguished Achievement Award in Sound in 2009. In 1961, he earned the first sound designer credit on Broadway for "Show Girl", a musical comedy revue that ran at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in Manhattan, New York. He began his life in theatre when he was 18 as an electrician. After World War II and 8 more years as an electrician, he moved to New York. He worked on Broadway for 27 years with such artists as George Abbott, Leonard Bernstein, Harold Prince, and Stephen Sondheim. He retired in 1986. He has many more Broadway credits than recording credits.
