The son of the actress Charlotte Arens attended school in Bern and completed a theater training. In 1947 he made his debut at the Stadttheater Bern. In 1950 he moved to the Deutsche Theater Göttingen under Heinz Hilpert and in 1953 to the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. In 1958 he was engaged at the Munich Kammerspiele, later he played at the Munich Residenztheater, the Vienna Burgtheater, Berlin Schillertheater, Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus and again in Munich. From 1963 he worked at the Schauspielhaus Zurich, where he not only took on numerous roles, but also directed for the first time. He appeared as a guest at various other theaters. He continued to direct plays, including Der zerbrochne Krug at the Ernst Deutsch Theater in Hamburg. Since the 1950s, he has also appeared in feature films, including the role of composer Carl Maria von Weber in the romance Durch die Wälder, durch die Auen. On television, he was seen in 1960 in A Christmas Carol in Prose or A Ghost Story for Christmas as the writer Charles Dickens. His best-known role may be that of Gaylord's father in the successful 1968 Malpass film Morgens um sieben ist die Welt noch in Ordnung. Arens, who was exceptionally the director of photography for the 1989 film Dr. M, also appeared before the public in readings and recitation evenings. He also wrote and directed radio plays.
