Lil Margie (Marjorie Elizabeth Clarke) (1945-2019), born Marjorie Elizabeth Clarke on February 23, 1945, in Northwest DC, left an indelible mark on the world of rhythm and blues. Known for her captivating stage presence and a voice that could move mountains, she was affectionately nicknamed "Little Margie." Her musical journey began at an early age, and by the time she was sixteen, she was already a professional artist. In 1961, Lil Margie, along with three other talented DC teenagers, formed the iconic R&B girl group The Jewels. Their harmonies were unique, often described as reminiscent of men's voices, and their sound was a fusion of soul, blues, and jazz that could best be described as "blue lights in the basement." They recorded several singles as The Four Jewels and later as The Jewels, with their hit song "Opportunity" reaching No. 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. In the mid-1960s, James Brown recognized The Jewels' extraordinary talent and invited them to join his revue, setting them on a path to national fame. They dazzled audiences at theaters and arenas, including New York City's Madison Square Garden. Although Lil Margie occasionally missed performances due to her DC commitments, her powerful presence and distinctive voice left a lasting impression on fans. Throughout her career, Lil Margie's music was a source of joy and inspiration. She released the album "At Last" in 2004, showcasing her prowess with R&B classics like "Mustang Sally" and the title track. Her dynamic performances and infectious showmanship captivated audiences worldwide. Notably, Lil Margie was more than just a talented artist; she also worked as a music specialist with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation for about four decades. She sang at events for all ages, from kids to seniors, and encouraged everyone to join her in song.
