Jewish-American composer, conductor, and orchestra leader (born May 18, 1881 in Lunna, Grodno Gubernia, Russian Empire [now Лунна, Belarus] - died October 9, 1926 in New York, NY, USA) Sandler grew up in Odessa, then, when his parents emigrated to Glasgow in the UK, he himself went to Warsaw where he studied conducting at the Warsaw Conservatory. He began to write music for Yiddish operettas in Warsaw and had his first great success with the music he wrote for Lateiner's operetta "Joseph With His Brothers". After working in Kiev, Warsaw, and Czernowitz, Sandler and his wife, singer Esther Neroslawska, emigrated to the United States in 1917. There he became a mainstay of Yiddish musical theater in Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City, writing the music for many successful operettas. His last big hit was the music for Isidore Lesh's operetta, "Volodka in Odessa" (1926).
