His education includes graduating from the Moscow Sveshnikov Choral School, Gnesyny Institute and the Kiev Conservatory. Following that he took a postgraduate course at the Leningrad Conservatory under Yevgeny Mravinsky, and later worked as his assistant at the [a343871]. In 1969, Serov became a prize-winner of the first International Contest of Conductors arranged by Herbert von Karajan in West Berlin.
