Phil Zampino is an experimental sound artist whose work primarily uses the studio as an audio canvas for electroacoustic composition with a diverse field of interest. He is the son of Syracuse Symphony principal clarinetist Gerald Zampino. His project CHANGES TO blind was initiated in Syracuse in 1984, working with multi-track tape recorders, keyboards and various percussive items to compose unusual song formats. He also engineered work for various bands at Syracuse University, many surrounding the band Sound of My Own Voice. The project moved to Schenectady in 1989, expanding the project's studio and working with bands revolving around Albany's ERL Records, as well as making connections with NYC artists including Bugs Black Blood and Haunted Toilet, and Blue Sausage Infant (Chester Hawkins). The CTb project was moved to New York City in 1992, morphing into experimental sound work using Cubase as a palette for sound composition. In 2002 Zampino started the online record store and distribution service Squidco.com. He also took part in the improvising sound trio ADD Orchestra with Len 37 Siegfried and Kurt Gottschalk, performing at various venues in NYC. In 2010 Zampino & Squidco moved to Wilmington, NC. Through Squidco and his Hooked on Sonics series he began presenting concerts of experimental and improvised music featuring international and local performers. He continues to obsessively compose and collaborate with local artists. He has composed works for the Wilmington Sound Orchestra, often working with Carl Kruger in the development and presentation of those works; the two have a duo projected titled Reverse Animals.
