Isabel Whatarau

New Zealand soprano singer of Maori songs in the 1950's and 1960s. Raised in the Hawkes Bay, daughter of James Tipuna Whatarau and his wife "Polly" Pareawa (née Otene). She sang with her sister Virginia Whatarau, [a3022807] and Howard Morrison in The Clive Trio in the 1950's and with the Maori Concert Party, touring Australia in 1956. Isabel married guitarist Peter Cowan in 1957. In 1965 she sang with the New Zealand Opera Company and Inia Te Wiata in "Porgy and Bess".
