US jazz drummer born in Pasadena, CA. He organized his first band, The Modern Jazz Majors, in college, building a glowing “rep” in local clubs such as The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. As Williams’ popularity grew, he became an in-demand drummer for the likes of Hampton Hawes, Teddy Edwards, Leroy Vinnegar and Roy Ayers. Do NOT confuse with rhythm & blues drummer Al Williams (14) active in the 50s.
