Japanese bassoonist Shigeru Ohta graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He won a prize at the International Competition at Ancorna in 1984 and graduated from Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Wien with the highest honors in 1985. He received the Minister of Education Award from the Austrian government. He has studied bassoon with Prof. Y. Kiryu, Prof. H.Mita, and Prof. A. Hennige. Prof. C.Öhlberger, and studied chamber music with Prof. K. Ohlberg. While in Europe, Ohta participated in Wiener Nonetts and the Chamber Ensemble Kontraste. After returning to Japan, he joined the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Japan Philharmonic as a principal bassoonist. Currently he is actively performing as a soloist in Japan, Austria, China, and the U.S.A. When he gave a recital in Vienna, the media praised him by calling him "the shining star of bassoonists!" In addition to Das Gustav-Mahler Quartett, he also plays with famous musicians and groups including A. Prinz (clarinetist), Berlin Bassoon Quartet, and H. Small (pianist, residing in the U.S.), and their concerts have been very well received. He is a lecturer of bassoon and chamber music at Shobi Gakuen Junior College and Tokyo. Conservatoire Shobi.
