American contemporary artist and educator (b. 1955, Detroit, Michigan); based in New York. Amy Sillman is renowned for her unique "process-based" paintings, which often involve non-traditional media, such as animation and installations, and for publishing several critically-acclaimed art zines. She is a Member of the American Academy Of Arts And Letters (2020) and has numerous other accolades, including the 1995 Award from the National Endowment For The Arts and Guggenheim Fellowship (2001). Sillman taught at Bard College (1997–2013) and Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt, Germany. Amy Sillman grew up in Chicago, relocating to New York when she was nineteen and earning her Bachelor's degree from the School of Visual Arts, NYC, in 1979. (She later attended Bard College, graduating with her MFA degree in 1995). In the early 1980s, Sillman became involved in NYC Downtown feminist and counterculture movements, working as Pat Steir's assistant and contributing to Heresies feminist magazine. She soon began participating in group exhibitions at Performance Space 122, New Museum, The Drawing Center, MoMA PS1 and other New York galleries. Sillman's had numerous solo exhibitions at MoMA, Whitney Museum Of American Art, The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, Portikus Frankfurt and other prestigious museums. Her works are in permanent collections at The Museum Of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Metropolitan Museum Of Art, The Art Institute Of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Museum Of Fine Arts Boston, National Gallery Of Art, San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art, Hammer Museum, Tate Modern and Moderna Museet, among others.
