Swedish opera singer (bass baritone) and viola/violin player, born January 4, 1943 in Stockholm. He studied at the Academy of Music in the soloist class in violin 1960–1965 and graduated as music director in 1965. He then played viola for a time in the Freskkvartetten. In the years 1971–74, he went to the solo singing class for, among others, Erik Saedén. He made his debut as a soloist in the role of Dulcamara in The Love Drink by Donizetti at Drottningholmsteatern in 1975. Appelgren was employed at the Royal Theater in Stockholm during the years 1976–78 and 1983–97. The roles include Pogner in The Master Singers in Nuremberg, Basilio in The Barber in Seville, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Scarpia in Tosca, Jochanaan in Salome and Golaud in Pelléas and Melisande. He has guest starred in Glyndebourne, Berlin, London, Copenhagen, Rome, Hong Kong, Moscow and Basel.
