James was born in Cleveland, Missouri to John and Florence Kircher Winters on September 13, 1934. In 1952. He graduated from Louisburg High School in Louisburg, Kansas and he served in the military receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1959. He worked at Bendix Aviation Corporation for 19 years. In 1970, he moved to Dixon, Missouri where he, along with an Army buddy Burl Copeland, co-owned and operated Triangle Pump Company. Jim had a love for bluegrass music and won many awards in fiddle competitions. He was accompanied as a young person by his father and later on, by his son Devin. He played fiddle for the bands, The Bluegrass Five as well as Bill Jones and the Bluegrass Travelers. Jim also recorded several albums with them.
