"Lee Charles is a gifted young singer of many musical persuasions. He is as much at home with current popular songs, roles in musical comedy and drama, and Anglo-American folksongs, as he is with the religious and secular music of his own people. Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1922, Mr. Charles was encouraged to study voice while still a young boy, and he came to New York City to study under the private tutelage of Greta Stueckgold. He has since been heard frequently on the concert stage as well as numerous musical shows, including Finians Rainbow, Lost In the Stars, Sandhog, Living The Life, and most recently Langston Hughes' Simply Heavenly. He is currently an important member of a popular folksong quartet, "The Skifflers." - taken from back cover of the "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" LP.
