John Horton Conway (b. 26 December 1937, d. 11 April 2020). English mathematician known for his work on finite group theory, knot theory, number theory, combinatorial game theory, coding theory, and recreational mathematics. Conway is known as the inventor of the cellular automaton, Conway's Life. He died of complications related to COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic in early 2020. His death was widely reported in numerous diverse STEM and culture fields both domestically as well as internationally.
