Swiss cultural mastermind, mainly active in the field of world music and intercultural exchange. Thomas Burkhalter founded Norient and norient.com in 2002 and lives in Berne. He was born in 1973 in Burgdorf, Switzerland and is Swiss and Dutch citizen. He studied ethnology in Zurich and got his PhD for studies on cultural ethnology about Beirut. His studies contained also music, geography and performing arts (Jazz saxophone and clarinet). In addition to his activity in music and on the ethnological platform Norient (where he is editor-in-chief), he is still active in scientific ethnology at the university in Berne doing basic research. He worked on several books, gave lectures and did also numerous performances as editor-in-chief and juror in the cultural field and as leader of cultural events.
