She left the magazine in 1967 and pursued her passion for nature photography, traveling to various places around the world and capturing the beauty and diversity of wildlife and landscapes. She published several books and articles, and her work appeared in prestigious magazines such as National Geographic, Audubon, Smithsonian, and Nikon World. She was one of the most successful female nature photographers in the country and an advocate for environmental conservation. She later studied biology at the City University of New York Graduate Center, but did not complete her Ph.D. She donated her photographic archive to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin.
