As trumpeter, we could hear Lars Sundbom, or publicly more known as Lars "Sumpen" Sundbom, for the first time at a gig, with his own band Sumpens Stompers, in a church, "Abrahamsbergskyrkan", in Bromma as early as in 1956. In 1963, Lars "Sumpen" Sundbom won a jazz competition, together with [a1610372], at the Gazell Club in Stockholm. They played their jazz music in a New Orleans style. In 1968, "Sumpen" Sundbom was done with the Gazell Club and left for the real New Orleans in USA, which would change his life thereafter. He met and was taught by musicians like Punch Miller, [a2246674], Alvin Alcorn and Kid Thomas Valentine. Later, on jazz tours in Europe, he had help of and played with musicians like Champion Jack Dupree, Percy Humphrey, George "Kid Sheik" Cola, Kid Thomas Valentine, Alton Purnell, Louis Nelson (2), Thais Clark, Little Brother Montgomery, Sunnyland Slim, Paul Barnes (2), Joe Thomas (6), and with his own band Sumpens Swingsters. In 1989, he was admitted as the oldest student at Kungliga Musikhögskolan I Stockholm, the oldest institution of higher education in music in Sweden, where he studied jazz pedagogy. His studies was successful and he received a scholarship to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 1990, as an European jazz representative there. In 2005, Lars "Sumpen" Sundbom was invited to the Bagamoyo Festival of Arts and Culture in Tanzania in Africa to play and give some inspiration to youngsters to start more Tanzanian jazz orchestras. After coming back to Scandinavia, he has played with [a271486] and The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band. In 1982, Lars "Sumpen" Sundbom started a summer jazz concert tradition in "Floda kyrka", in the same church he had been appointed as vicar the year before. The tradition still goes on and the spectators in "Floda kyrka" could see and hear Lars "Sumpen" Sundbom, his son Marcus on saxophone and his daughter Magdalena as vocalist being the guest artists to Per Notini's New Orleans band in 2018. In the summer concert of 2019, Sumpens Angels, including both Marcus and Magdalena Sundbom, will be performing in "Floda kyrka" again.
