Colombian visual artist, sculptor and educator (b. 1958, Bogotá). Doris Salcedo is a notable representative of the "Art as Activism" movement and earned numerous prestigious accolades, including Guggenheim Fellowship (1995). Salcedo's artworks are often composed of commonplace items: wooden furniture, clothing, concrete, grass, etc. She had solo exhibitions at renowned museums and galleries, such as New Museum Of Contemporary Art, San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art, Museum Of Contemporary Art Chicago, Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, Tate Modern, White Cube in London, Centro Galego De Arte Contemporanea, Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, and MAXXI. Doris Salcedo lives and works in her hometown, Bogota, and has been teaching at Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Salcedo earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá in 1980. She then traveled to the United States and attended the New York University, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in 1984. She participated in numerous international group exhibitions since the mid-90s, including Documenta XI in Kassel, MoMA PS1, Menil Collection in Houston, Texas, Hayward Gallery and the Oberlin College's Allen Memorial Art Museum.
