Vladimir Tarnopolski (b. 1955) is a Russian composer, head of Contemporary Music Department and professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory, founder and artistic director of Studio For New Music Ensemble. Tarnopolski studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory with Edison Denisov and Nikolai Sidelnikov. Tarnopolski's music has been performed by such ensembles as the Symphonie-Orchester Des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Schönberg Ensemble, and conductors Mstislav Rostropovich, Ingo Metzmacher and Alexander Lazarev. In 1991, Ensemble Modern commissioned his Cassandra. Gennadi Rozhdestvensky called his Cello Concerto one of the most important pieces in recent Russian musical history in 1988. Since 1992, Tarnopolski works as a professor at the Moscow Conservatory, and has been a visiting professor in various schools at Germany, Austria, Holland, Switzerland, and the USA. He founded the Centre for Contemporary Music in Moscow Conservatory (CCMM) in 1993.
