The Thomas Wolsey School Band Thomas Wolsey Ormiston Academy (TWOA) is a school for children, aged 3-16 with physical, medical and/or sensory needs and associated learning difficulties. We joined the Ormiston Multi-Academy Trust (OAT) in February 2018 and changed our name from Thomas Wolsey School. A school-wide survey carried out by the school council voted overwhelmingly (87%) to keep our much-loved logo and make minimal changes to our name, whilst embracing all the many opportunities that come with joining the Ormiston Multi-Academy Trust. Prior to joining OAT, Thomas Wolsey School was a 'stand alone' academy, having converted in 2012 but was not always known by this name. The school dates back to the 1930s when it was known as Whitton Open Air School. It was located about a mile away from its current site on the Old Norwich Road. Open-air schools were purpose-built educational institutions for children, that were built on the concept that fresh air, good ventilation and exposure to the outside contributed to improved health. The children who attended the school in the 1930s had a variety of health conditions which were very different to those of our children today. Many lessons took place outside or in very well-ventilated classrooms and every day included time for an outdoor nap! Over the years, the outdoor classrooms were linked by a series of corridors creating a school which, although very much loved, was no longer fit for purpose and in January 2009 we moved into our current building in Defoe Road. We love our new building but we love finding out about what life used to be like for the children who used to go to our school many years ago!
