Michael Bates was born on December 4, 1920 in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, British India. The son of an Anglo-Indian civil servant, he served as an officer in the Gurkhas & fought with the Chindits behind Japanese lines in Burma during WWII. After the war he became an actor, known for A Clockwork Orange (1971), Patton (1970) and It Ain't Half Hot Mum (1974). He died on January 11, 1978 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.
