John Woolf (2)

Sir John Woolf (15 March 1913, Cricklewood, North London — 28 June 1999, London), knighted in 1975, was a British film producer who primarily collaborated with his younger brother, James Woolf (1920—1966). Sons of film producer and distributor C.M. Woolf (1879—1942), John and James both attended Eton College; John also studied at Institut Montana in Switzerland. In 1942, after their father died, John Woolf took over the family business, General Film Distributions. Seven years later, in 1949, he resigned and co-founded Romulus Films production and Remus Films distribution with James. He won the "Best Picture" for Carol Reed's 1969 musical Oliver! and shared the Academy Award nomination with his brother for the 1959 Room at the Top drama. John Woolf was married three times, including to actress Dorothy Vernon (1875—1970); according to his New York Times obituary, John had at least one son.
