Roy Cummings (2)

Roy Cummings was a leading trumpeter player, band leader, and music educator in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States from the 1960s through the 1990s. Cummings earned his bachelor's degrees in music and music education at the University of Washington in 1961 and quickly became a first-call trumpeter in the Seattle area. He was a member of the Official Seattle World's Fair Band in 1962. Cummings returned to the UW campus in 1970 as a trumpet instructor. He became director of the UW's large jazz ensemble in 1975 and served as chair of jazz studies from 1979 to 1993. Alumni from the UW Studio Jazz Ensemble during this period include Kenny G, Thomas Marriott, and Marc Seales. In 1998, Cummings was named to the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame.
