John Chapman (14)

English Artist and Engraver (active 1792-1823) One of the most gifted stipple engravers of the late eighteenth century, relatively little is known of the life of John Chapman. He is thought to have been mostly self-taught. During his career, Chapman engraved exceptional allegorical subjects after the designs of J. Smith and Raphael Corbould. He worked closely with Thomas Macklin on his Shakespeare series; almost half of the engravings bear his name.
