Mileham Hayes

Mileham Hayes was born in Brisbane in 1940. He co-founded the ’Varsity 5’ in 1959, but then for a few years was not obviously active in jazz whilst he completed post graduate medical studies. On return to Australia in 1974 and 1975, he had his own radio jazz programme ’Stomp Off, Let’s Go!’ on the ABC. He reviewed for the Courier-Mail and was a freelance writer for other papers and magazines including the National Times. In 1976 he was president of the 31 st Australian Jazz Convention and also formed his own band ’Dr. Jazz’ who had a record breaking national television series. He is the author of ’The Encyclopedia of Australian Jazz’.
