Shirley Albert (2)

American songwriter. Born c.1920 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Died April 2000. She graduated from Worcester State Teacher's College in 1942 then moved to New York City to pursue a musical and theatrical career. She is known for the compositions "Lavender Coffin", a swing classic, and "Cigarette Serenade" Her songs were recorded by jazz greats including Lionel Hampton, Tex Beneke, and Tony Pasta. Albert charted twice as a songwriter in the U.S., both with the song "Lavender Coffin", and both in 1949: first by The Fat Man Robinson Quintet (#9 R&B) then by Lionel Hampton and His Orchestra (#13 R&B).
