Inaudible

INaudible asbl, also known as Collectif Inaudible, is a Belgian non-profit organization and musical collective, established in 1976 by Guy Strale, Philippe Smeyers (known as Phil LeGris), and Jean-Claude Deroubaix at Palais Des Beaux-Arts, Brussels. The collective's founders saw 'free improvisation' as the most "privileged way of musical expression, liberated by its very nature from any elitist, sexist or racist discrimination, academicism, and aesthetic prejudice." INaudible is sponsored by Communauté Française De Belgique and other European foundations. In 1981, INaudible self-released their debut Musique Improvisée LP, a limited-edition private press. The album showcased INaudible's early collective improvisations at Bozar, Brussels, recorded with an open-reel Revox tape machine. Upon hearing this record, Strale's friend, vocalist Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg, joined the group and subsequently became one of the key participants (frequently improvising in duo with Guy Strale). INaudible organized two large-scale festivals in '85-86 and hosted a continually growing number of concerts, improv and recording sessions, rehearsals, etc. By the mid-90s, INaudible had a relatively consistent 'core' line-up, and they continued organizing regular workshops and performances for local improvisers and international artists visiting Brussels. In 2005, INaudible presented 2333414 CD, co-released with Emanem label and featuring twelve duos, trios, and quartets recorded live and in-studio since '01. The record showcased their creative process, interactions of various smaller groups within the collective: both regularly rehearsing combos and spontaneously formed one-off ensembles.
