Austin, Texas hard rock band. Black Earth started out as Ving Ra and the Ultrasonic in the fall of 1997 in San Diego, California. Ving and founding drummer Shawn Alvear decided to move their act to Austin, Texas. They performed as a five piece and had several difficult lineup changes. When Dave Rangel was recruited into the band, they were reborn as a three piece named Black Earth.
