Joel Palmer is a Detroit-born jazz historian and music producer. He was formerly the Associate Curator of the William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana. Joel was also a founding committee member for the organization of the Montreux--Detroit International Jazz Festival and served as President of Marcus Belgrave's performance orchestra, The New Detroit Jazz Ensemble. In 1979, Joel produced the album Betty Lou in association with his close friend New Orleans Musician Charlie Gabriel. The vinyl album features vocals by Joel's late wife, Betty Lou Landreth and some of Detroit's most acclaimed musicians, including the famous Funk Brothers of Motown renown. The album was privately pressed in a limited edition and released on Joel's Yaya label. The album has, in recent years, found favor amongst collectors of vinyl classics and is scheduled for a 2021 re-issue in exclusive association with UK-based backatcha records.
