S. Fly

Patrick "S. Fly" Johnson (also known as Blaq Angel) is a pioneering producer and hip hop activist, and was the chief founder of the rap group Red Light District, which released several recordings between 1996 and 2003. Johnson has formed many alliances within the Alabama music community, joining jazz/soul/funk band Mecca’s Groove in 2004 (horn section – trombone). He has performed with Mary J. Blige, Run-DMC, Outkast, Goodie Mobb, and other national acts. He has also produced for and recorded with several of Alabama’s elite, including Thed Weller, Sam Addams, John Paul, Supreme, and Sharrif Simmons. In 2006, he was chosen by APTV to produce original music for the soundtrack and score to "Thornton Dial Has Something to Say", a documentary about visual artist Thornton Dial and the racism and rejection he has faced in the art world. The film’s trailer won a regional Emmy in 2007, and the full length documentary was awarded four Emmys in 2008. Johnson is also a member of the board of directors for the Museum of Urban Art and the Hip Hop is Music Foundation (HHIM), both dedicated to the education and empowerment of communities through the urban arts and the culture of hip hop music. Johnson released a full length solo CD, “Where Did it Go Wrong – the Birth of Blaq Angel”, in 2008.
