“The landscape of Northwestern Ontario has a weight to it; from the ancient mass of the Canadian Shield underfoot to the ponderous silence of the boreal forest, there’s something about this region that naturally conveys a sense of heaviness.” – Kate Erickson This heaviness, in atmosphere and directness, presents itself in the music of songwriter Jory Strachan and the project he titles Wrecker. Like a vast landscape peeking through a thick fog, Strachan`s songs open themselves up gradually, giving time for space to be digested by the eye and soul, but unforgettable when in view. The wilderness hides no truths, and this is the key to Strachan`s inescapable honesty. Raised in the woods of northwestern Ontario and emerging in the punk scenes of dirty basements and dingy bars pock-marked along the great north American rock, Strachan’s style steadily grew into a mature sound that is uniquely his own: channeling song structures and writing styles of American folk and country music while maintaining the energy and passion from his youth as a misguided punk. Diving into the unknown in a dilapidated van since his early teens, Strachan never really slowed down, jumping around from place to place, city to town, job to job, gig to gig, reminiscent of the travelers and storytellers of the bygone days of America; a new-age wanderer. “Music to me is a lot like work, but not in the insufferable way a dead-end 9 to 5 is, but like planting a crop, nurturing it for months, trimming off what you need to, until its ready for harvest and shared with the world; where your blood, sweat and tears feel worth it. Even if only a few are nourished by it, the reward is in the work you did.” Wrecker’s first release “homewrecker”, a 5 song collaborative split with Manitoban songwriter Bailee Woods of “housepanther” dedicated to the theme of infidelity was released on Valentine’s Day, February 14th of 2019. The songs introduced audiences to Wrecker’s capacity for vulnerability and fearless approach to honesty in all its beautifully hideous faces. Wrecker has toured much of north America, showcased at SXSW in Austin, Texas and has played several festivals in 2019. Wrecker is currently recording new music for 2021.
