In late 2000 and early 2001, Alan and Tim S., along with, then bassist Tim M., were writing songs for an album they had been planning to record. After months of auditions and near misses, Tim S. met with, then Ill Omen frontman Geoff Dilts, to give him a copy of their music to begin his audition. "When I first met Geoff I thought he was a really nice guy, but after listening to his band's demo, I was a little unsure whether or not he'd fit in to what we were doing... but I said, 'We'll give him a chance'", says Tim S. "I heard the music for the first time in their studio and right away I was hooked. I went home I told myself that there was no way I was going to let this pass me by. But the true test for me was to see if I could make them like me enough to keep me around after the album was finished", Geoff commented. The four began rehearsing the songs they had written. Things were going smoothly and after a short time, they began writing new material... as a band. "It was really strange to me", Geoff states. "I was never really given the position as their lead singer... they just haven't asked me to leave yet. I guess that's a good sign." With more than a few songs in their library, they started rehearsing for what would be their first show. A benefit concert had been scheduled for abused children, and the group was excited about the opportunity to play. Unfortunately, due to logistic faults, the show was cancelled. "Looking back now, I'm really glad that we didn't have to play that show... I know I wasn't ready and it would not have been good for us to bomb our first show", says Alan. Looking forward, the band was looking for the next chance to play, when problems in the band started to fester. "Problems began to arise with our bassist, Tim M., the biggest of which was our lack of communication", Geoff remembers. Tim S. says, "We knew that if were to continue on the path we were headed, things were going to fall apart before they really even started". Wanting the best for all parties involved, Tim M. was let go. Now the remaining three were tasked with the painstaking process of replacement... not fun for any band. "We tried a few people out, but things just weren't going the way that we hoped they would. People just didn't seem that interested when they showed up... why even bother. But I do remember getting an email from this really nice guy saying that he was interested in the job, so I gave him a call", Geoff says. "He showed up extremely enthusiastic and, best of all, prepared. He knew the music and looked like he was ready to work". The band started again in high gear with their regular practice schedule. The acclimation process didn't take long, and soon Lee was up to speed with the rest of the guys. In Jan 2002, the band hit the stage for the first time. "I was so excited to be on stage and truly had a great time. Everything came together for us and I knew exactly why we were there", Alan commented. "I don't think that we could have ever asked for a better show... much less a first show. The train is moving and my best advice is to either get on or get the hell out of the way", Geoff says. Look for Bull Rush to steamroll over you in the near future... a must see.
