Vasily Ilyich Safonov

Vasily Ilyich Safonov (January 25 [February 6], 1852, the village of Ishcherskaya [5], Terek region - February 14 [27], 1918, Kislovodsk) - Russian conductor, pianist, teacher, public figure. One of the most prominent and authoritative representatives of the musical culture of Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rector of the Moscow Conservatory (1889-1905). Principal conductor of The New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1906-1909). Companion of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
