Fiddler from Millsap, Texas, born March 23, 1935, died Aug. 21, 2012, age 71. The son of country-swing fiddler Troy Gilbert, he began playing guitar and bass in his father’s band as a child before switching to fiddle. Gilbert played with country/Western swing bands through high school and college, including The Sunset Playboys and The Aggie Ramblers. Gilbert stopped playing in 1958 but resumed the fiddle in 1964 and in 1973 co-founded the Texas Old Time Fiddlers Association. In 1998 he co-founded the Western Swing Society of the Southwest.
