American Baptist minister and writer of hymns (born July 12, 1855 in Yadkin Co., North Carolina – died September 21, 1938 in Kansas City, MO) The son of a Baptist Minister in Flat Rock, Brown was ordained a minister himself in 1875. After serving as a pastor in Pleasant Hill, MO and Butler, MO, Brown became one of the editors of the Central Baptist, a Baptist paper in St. Louis, MO, in 1884. As Corresponding Secretary of the State Mission Board of the Missouri Baptist General Association, he organized Tabernacle Church in Kansas City in 1886. In 1896, he became editor of a Kansas City-based Baptist paper that he founded, "The Word and Way." From 1897, he also served as pastor of a new church on Michigan Ave., and from 1910, as pastor of Tabernacle Church in Kansas City. Apart from six books on Christian themes, the Rev. S. M. Brown wrote more than 50 songs and published four song collections, "Gospel Alarm," "Missionary Triumph," "Songs of Zion Nr. 1" and ""Songs of Zion Nr. 2."
