Alex "Al" Smith

Alex ‘Al’ Smith is a multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Philadelphia, PA After studying piano and percussion in New York with Azande Cummings, Erik Deutsch, Billy Martin, and Elliot Jacobson, he curated an art space and music venue for three years while starting to explore multiple musical directions. Al went on to tour the United States and Europe with various artists, as well as play with Jackie Greene & Friends, the Erik Santana Trio, Bob Weir, Oteil Burbridge , G, Calvin Weston, Steve Earle, Fang Percussion, Jim Lauderdale, Pappy Biondo, Brad Parsons & Starbird, Erik Deutsch, Larry Campbell & Theresa Williams, Pickin’ on the Dead, Gatos Blancos, Superhuman Happiness, Marco Benevento, and Vita & the Woolfe. You also may have seen him sitting in with Greensky Bluegrass, Yonder Mountain String Band, Anders Osborne, Fruition, Cabinet and more. When Al is not on the road, he teaches music lessons for students with disabilities, performs on jingles, and volunteers with LiveUp Programs.
