Leading scholar and educator in the field of fourteenth-century French music and medieval music theory. She was a founding member of SUNY-Stony Brook's music department, where she is now professor emerita. Her The European Musical Heritage: 800-1750 (1987) was used in music history courses across the U.S.A. for several decades. She has taught on various musicological subjects ranging from medieval and Renaissance music history, theory, and analysis to the works of Stravinsky. With Winton Dean she co-edited a performance edition of Handel's opera Giulio Cesare; published in 1998, its score and parts were available from 1978 onward, and it was used in René Jacobs's 1991 recording of the opera.
