This is "Uz Pomoć Velikih Prijatelja" (“With a Little Help of Great Friends”) by Serbian guitarist and composer Ljubomir Sedlar, released on the famous Belgrade label PGP RTB in the late 70s. A warm blend of jazz-funk, jazz-rock and soulful Ex-YU groove, with plenty of electric guitar work and rich arrangements.
The “great friends” in the title are not a joke – the album features top Yugoslav session players and singers (Kornelije Kovač, Zlatko Pejaković, Maja Odžaklijevska and others), so you get that classy late-70s studio sound with strong musicianship all the way through. Collectors of Ex-YU jazz / funk know this LP very well, but it doesn’t appear often in the UK, especially as an original PGP RTB pressing.
Musically it moves from softer, melodic songs to more groovy moments and even a cool take on “New York, New York”. If you enjoy Yugoslav 70s jazz-rock, Balkan funk, or just want something different on your turntable than the usual US/UK classics, this album is a beautiful, slightly obscure piece of that world.
