WRIR-LP 97.3FM is a non-profit, volunteer driven radio station located in Richmond, VA. The stations mission is to provide air time to unrepresented music, news and views to promote cultural diversity in Richmond.
The inception of WRIR was created when a challenge was given to Christopher Maxwell from a local NPR station employee, after Mr. Maxwell complained to him about their lack of diversity and community focused shows. "Well, why don't you start your own damn radio station"! And Mr. Maxwell did just that. He and other local activists, Scott Burger, Leland Maurello, Alan Schintzius and Christian Hendrickson banded together and started what would be WRIR as an internet radio station in the basement of what is now The Camel Restaurant. After a few years the window was finally open and the budding station got the FCC okay to begin production. The group had about a year to get the station up and operating. A plea for help was sent out into the community and the community arrived with much support and excitement. With the help of many integral community members the station went on air January 1st, 2005. It continues to go strong with the generous support of donations from the listening community.
