American vocal group who performed mostly pop standards from 1947 to 1960. The three redheads from different parts of the country met at the University of California in Los Angeles. They were known for their easy going, exuberant, happy sound and comic arrangements to songs, making the audience part of songs with sing-a-longs and hand clapping. The group consisted of: - Robert H. (Red aka Smith) Robinson (vocals, banjo, and guitar) [Norfolk, Virginia] - Saul Striks (piano) [Detroit, Michigan] - Major Short (double bass) [San Francisco, California] They charted three times between 1955-56: "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" reached #7 in the U.S., followed by "When All the Streets Are Dark", which reached #90, and "In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town", which reach #27. Also associated with Redheads Mus., Inc. publishing for their songwriting copyrights.
